Abstract: Dry Eye Disease (DED) is a multifactorial disorder of the ocular surface characterised by tear film instability, inflammation, and ocular discomfort, leading to impaired vision and reduced quality of life. Conventional treatment approaches, primarily topical eye drops, are limited by poor bioavailability, rapid precorneal elimination, and the need for frequent administration, all of which affect patient compliance. In recent years, nano-emulsion-based drug delivery systems have gained significant attention as an advanced strategy to overcome these limitations. Nano-emulsions, due to their nanoscale droplet size, enhance drug solubility, improve corneal permeability, and prolong ocular residence time, thereby enabling sustained drug release and improved therapeutic outcomes. This review highlights the pathophysiology of DED, discusses the limitations of conventional therapies, and provides a comprehensive overview of nano-emulsion formulation strategies, mechanisms of action, and recent advancements in ocular drug delivery. Overall, nano-emulsion systems demonstrate considerable potential in improving drug efficacy, reducing dosing frequency, and enhancing patient compliance in the management of dry eye disease.
